On November 12, KAAGNY President Charles Yoon presented an award to Mr. Nam Su Han (age 73) recognizing his bravery in a subway attack that occurred back in July.
At 7:25 a.m. on July 5, 2020, a 71-year-old man was attacked by a man wielding a pair of scissors and a knife on the 7 Train. Suddenly, without provocation, the assailant began yelling at the man sitting across from him before getting up and stabbing him. It was at this point where Mr. Han intervened to try to stop the assault.
“Seeing another man who is similar in age to me being assaulted made me feel as though I was also being attacked,” Mr. Han said during his meeting with President Yoon. “Although I was afraid, the only thing I could think to do was to help him.”
“It isn’t easy for someone to intervene in such a dangerous and frightening situation in order to help another person,” President Yoon said. “I admire and thank Mr. Han for his exemplary show of courage.”
Mr. Han, who was hospitalized after the assault, suffered from a severe laceration on his wrist and chest. He has not been able to work since the July attack and continues to receive medical treatment for his injuries.
During Mr. Han’s visit to KAAGNY headquarters, President Charles Yoon and Executive VP Kay Kim thanked him for his bravery and presented to Mr. Han an award recognizing his courage as well as a sum of money to help support him while he receives treatment.
