COVID-19 Pandemic | Message from KAAGNY President Charles Yoon

Dear friends,

As we near six weeks since shelter-in-place was declared for New York, I hope that you are staying safe. For those who are on the front lines providing essential services, thank you for your sacrifice. For those who have lost loved ones or friends, please accept the community’s deepest condolences.

Times like these test whether the existing social structure can meet the social challenges. A silver-lining to the current pandemic has been how the Korean American community has banded together to help overcome the challenges and to assist the most vulnerable members of the community.

As it became apparent that we needed to prepare as a community to address the oncoming COVID-19 storm, in late February, KAAGNY formed the Korean American Community’s COVID-19 task force comprised of community organizations and leaders to tackle issues ranging from inadequate healthcare, failing small businesses, and increasing incidents of hate crimes.

Since then, as the pandemic has unfolded in the greater New York area, organizations and individuals rose to the challenge. I would like to devote this edition of the newsletter to give recognition to those individuals and organizations – keeping in mind that this is just a small snapshot of what the community is doing to tackle the impact of COVID-19.

Charles Yoon
President
The Korean American Association of Greater New York
